Creating community safe zones – reduce the speed limit on New Street and the roads off it to 20 mph

New Street and its neighbouring roads including; Devonshire, Cambridge, Oxford, Bedford, Livingstone, Barrington, Station and Depot and Victoria are all part of a residential area made up of predominantly older narrow streets with little or no off road parking. These streets can be congested and crossing safely, as well as parking is sometimes an issue. This mixed community includes homes with young families and many older, and, in some instances infirm residents. Cars regularly speed dangerously along these narrow roads and on occasion have damaged parked cars and caused a number of accidents. Many older people are afraid to walk across New Street.

There is an environmental benefit. Cutting speed limits to 20 mph can result in reduced emissions from car exhausts and so cause less pollution in these built up areas.

We the undersigned call upon West Sussex County Council to amend the current maximum speed limit of 30mph to 20mph and in so doing create a safe zone for those living in this part of Horsham. Twenty is Plenty!
