Karen Barber: “I have lived in Sussex for over 30 years, 8 in Billingshurst. Mother of 3 adult sons facing the challenges of student debt, low pay and zero contract hours. I worked in the civil service in Whitehall for 15 years and now run a small business. I am passionate about Labour policy to regenerate local economies, improve public funding to key services and to initiate and support green initiatives.”

Brian Johnson: “I have spent most of my adult life in Sussex, where I have pursued careers in both the entertainment industry (pubs, hotels and nightclubs up to junior management), and computing within the business and academic sectors. Diagnosed with M.E. in 1994, relapsed in 2010, I have experienced first hand the disparity within Britain’s ‘modern day’ economy – both as an able-bodied and disabled member of society, employed and not. I currently work, as a volunteer, in radio as a producer and presenter.

‘Austerity’ has hit not only the poor, disabled, elderly, and other vulnerable groups with respect to healthcare, it has also hit education by stripping it of vital funding, sold off Public Assets across the country, and started to work its way into the workplace through zero-hour contracts, and other mechanisms, driving down wages and effectively stripping workers of the rights, and securities, that employment used to provide.
This is a trend that urgently needs reversing and Labour is, currently, the only party that seeks to redress this imbalance, and restore the institutions and infrastructure that years of Conservative mismanagement has been determined to sell off to profit businesses, rather than to serve the people for which they were created. As your candidate, I pledge to pursue a return to a Britain that works: “For the many, not the few“.

If you are voting in Billingshurst on May 2nd, you have three votes. Make sure you use all votes for your local Labour candidates. At the last election in Horsham, the Lib Dems came third, behind the Labour & Conservative candidates. A vote for the Lib Dems or any other minor party is a risk and increases the chances of the Tories winning here.
